Educators receive new technology for the classroom
The teachers of Digital Classroom Cadre 1 entered their monthly meeting empty handed - but left with devices to help reshape their classrooms.

A total of 20 teachers from throughout HCISD were surprised with goodie bags which contained a Macbook and an iPad 2.

These teachers are a part of the initial year of digital classrooms, and their lessons aim to incorporate technology into the students’ curriculum.

“It is set to transform teaching,” said Dr. Laura Sheneman, Coordinator of Library Services. “It is not just giving teachers these devices, but transforming how they interact with students in the classroom.”

The individuals in Cadre 1 come from 17 campuses across HCISD, including Ms. Ezelina Marroquin, an 8th grade Language Arts teacher at Vela Middle school. Teachers were selected through an application process in May 2012. HCISD intends to increase the number of digital classrooms to 60 for the next school year.

As the initial excitement passed, the month’s layer of learning topic was discussed: use of social media in the classroom. Their meetings will focus on a new topic each month and continue until the end of the school year.

For teachers not in the Digital Classroom Cadre, the same equipment is available for use at their campus Information Literacy Center (ILC or Library).
